September Visiting Teaching

Strengthening Families by Increasing Spirituality

Julie B. Beck, Relief Society general president, said: “There has grown in me an overwhelming testimony of the value of daughters of God. … I have felt that there has never been a greater need for increased faith and personal righteousness. There has never been a greater need for strong families and homes.”

Sisters can help create strong homes and families as they act on personal revelation. “The ability to qualify for, receive, and act on personal revelation is the single most important skill that can be acquired in this life,” Sister Beck continued. “Qualifying for the Lord’s Spirit begins with a desire for that Spirit and implies a certain degree of worthiness. Keeping the commandments, repenting, and renewing covenants made at baptism lead to the blessing of always having the Lord’s Spirit with us. Making and keeping temple covenants also adds spiritual strength and power to a woman’s life. Many answers to difficult questions are found by reading the scriptures because the scriptures are an aid to revelation. … Daily prayer is essential to having the Lord’s Spirit with us.”1

We also strengthen our family members spiritually as we help them understand Heavenly Father’s eternal plan. “What can we do to better prepare our children spiritually for their eternal roles?” asked ElderM. Russell Ballard of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles. “Perhaps the most inclusive answer is: Teach them how to live the principles of the gospel.” This teaching comes through daily prayer, scripture study, and family mealtimes as well as weekly family home evening and Church attendance. Elder Ballard explains: “We prepare each day, right now, for eternal life. If we are not preparing for eternal life, we are preparing for something less, perhaps something far less.”2

August Visiting Teaching Message

A Society of Holy Women

Eliza R. Snow, second Relief Society general president, taught: “Paul the Apostle anciently spoke of holy women. It is the duty of each one of us to be a holy woman. We shall have elevated aims, if we are holy women. We shall feel that we are called to perform important duties. No one is exempt from them. There is no sister so isolated, and her sphere so narrow but what she can do a great deal towards establishing the Kingdom of God upon the earth.”1

Sisters, we are not isolated nor is our sphere narrow. By accepting the gift of activity in Relief Society, we become part of what the Prophet Joseph described as a society “separate from all the evils of the world—choice, virtuous, and holy.”2

This society helps us strengthen our faith and grow spiritually by giving us leadership, service, and teaching opportunities. In our service a new dimension is added to our lives. We progress spiritually, and our sense of belonging, identity, and self-worth increases. We realize that the whole intent of the gospel plan is to provide an opportunity for us to reach our fullest potential.

Relief Society helps prepare us to receive the blessings of the temple, to honor the covenants we make, and to be engaged in the cause of Zion. Relief Society helps us increase our faith and personal righteousness, strengthen families, and seek out and help those in need.

The work of Relief Society is holy, and doing holy work creates holiness in us.

July Visiting Teaching Message:

Come to the Temple and Claim Your Blessings

Sisters, we are most blessed. The Savior stands at the head of this Church. We are led by living prophets. We have the holy scriptures. And we have many holy temples throughout the world where we can obtain the ordinances necessary to help us return to our Heavenly Father.

We go first to the temple for ourselves. “The primary purpose of the temple,” explained Elder Robert D. Hales of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, “is to provide the ordinances necessary for our exaltation in the celestial kingdom. Temple ordinances guide us to our Savior and give us the blessings that come to us through the Atonement of Jesus Christ. Temples are the greatest university of learning known to man, giving us knowledge and wisdom about the Creation of the world. Endowment instructions give guidance as to how we should conduct our lives here in mortality. … The ordinance consists of a series of instructions on how we should live and covenants we make to live righteously by following our Savior.”1

But our temple service does not end there. President Boyd K. Packer, President of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, taught: “Acting as proxy for someone who has gone beyond the veil, you will have reviewed before you the covenants that you have made. You will have reinforced in your mind the great spiritual blessings that are associated with the house of the Lord. … In the covenants and ordinances center the blessings that you may claim in the holy temple.”2

Come to the temple and then come again. Making and keeping temple covenants will keep us on course to the greatest of all blessings—eternal life.

My dear sisters, how blessed we are! Not only are we members of the Church, but we are also members of Relief Society—“the Lord’s organization for women.”1Relief Society is evidence of God’s love for His daughters.

Doesn’t your heart thrill as you recall the exciting beginnings of this society? On March 17, 1842, the Prophet Joseph Smith organized the sisters “under the priesthood after the pattern of the priesthood.”2

To be organized “under the priesthood” gave sisters authority and direction. Eliza R. Snow, second Relief Society general president, taught that Relief Society “cannot exist without the Priesthood, from the fact that it derives all its authority and influe00nce from that source.”3Elder Dallin H. February Visiting Teach Message
The History and Heritage of Relief Society

Eliza R. Snow recalled the Prophet Joseph Smith teaching that “although the name [Relief Society] may be of modern date, the institution is of ancient origin.”¹

Heavenly Father and His Son, Jesus Christ, visited Joseph Smith and, through him, restored the fulness of the gospel to the earth. Relief Society was part of that restoration. The organization of the Church was not complete until the sisters were organized.²

In the coming months, each Visiting Teaching Message will give us the opportunity to learn more about the history of Relief Society and its part in the restored gospel. For many reasons, understanding our history is not only important but essential.

First, an understanding of our history inspires us to be the women of God we need to be. By following the examples of noble Latter-day Saint women, we can learn from the past how to face the future.³

Second, our history teaches that the same principles that existed in the early Church are our foundational principles today. This knowledge and our purposes—to increase faith and personal righteousness, strengthen families and homes, and help those in need—draw a connection between our past and our present.

Third, as we value our history, we can better share our spiritual heritage. President Henry B. Eyring, First Counselor in the First Presidency, said: “You pass the heritage along as you help others receive the gift of charity. … The history of Relief Society is recorded in words and numbers, but the heritage is passed heart to heart.”⁴

Finally, understanding our history helps make us an effective part of the future of Relief Society. President Spencer W. Kimball (1895–1985) explained, “We know that women who have deep appreciation for the past will be concerned about shaping a righteous future.”⁵

Marilee Clark was born in Price, but has lived in Orem since she was 5 years old. She spent time in Detroit for her mission and Logan for college. She loves to sew, knit, play the guitar, fix up the house, grow gardens and generally just make stuff. She loves to read, hike, swing on swings, slide down slides, play sports, cook food. She likes to do most of what she tries. Marilee has too many favorite books to list but if you talk to her about books she can tell you more. Her favorite scripture is Philippians 4:11-13. Her favorite places to visit are Utah’s National Parks. Her favorite food is chocolate, tomatoes, homemade bread, soup, and lots of stuff she shouldn’t eat! Marilee work at Orem Library as an associate librarian and specializes in teen services. She has a mom and a dad, one sister, two brothers, two brother-in-laws and 2 sister-in-laws, 6 nieces and 2 on the way. She also has a pug names Gus. Marilee once ate a worm and was afraid of dogs until she was twenty. She claims she is a little off her rocker – but in a good way!

JoAnn has worked at Romney Produce Co., Shamrock Foods, Southern Utah Home Care, and has owned her own cleaning business. JoAnn has also been an aide at Hurricane Elementary school, and also worked with the orchestra there. JoAnn has one son Daniel who is 22 and is a graduate from Dixie College and will be going to USU this fall. She also has 2 brothers and 2 sisters. JoAnn also enjoys swimming and has survived cancer twice when the doctors said she wouldn’t.

Sister Spotlight: Lyndsey Wells

Meet Lyndsey Wells.....

Lyndsey was born in Burbank, California and grew up in Rancho Cucamonga, CA. She went to BYU so she lived in Provo for four years, and since then she has lived in New York City, Los Angeles and Pasadena CA before moving to good old Orem.

Lyndsey has one younger sister [who is married, so she also has one brother-in-law], one younger brother and one maltese dog that her mom treats like another member of the family.

Lyndsey's favorite book is "These is My Words" by Nancy Turner, and her favorite scripture is Alma 37:37...."Counsel with the Lord in all thy doings, and he will direct thee for good: Yea, when thou liest down at night lie down unto the Lord, that he may watch over you in your sleep; and when thou risest in the morning let thy heart be full of thanks unto God; and if ye do these things, ye shall be lifted up at the last day."

Lyndsey's favorite vacation was just last year when she and her husband spent two weeks touring Europe, including going to the top of the Eiffel Tower and taking the official Sound of Music tour through the Austrian countryside.

Lyndsey says she could eat Mexican food for every meal...beyond that, she loves Thai food, In N Out and cookies [not together of course].

Lyndsey likes to blog [she has two, a personal blog http://elldub.blogspot.com and a stationery blog http://the-stationery-place.blogspot.com], watch movies, go out to eat, read, run and play games with friends. She is also trying to learn to sew.

For work Lyndsey does marketing for a scrapbook company in Orem. Before that she worked for a worldwide public relations firm in downtown LA and traveled around the country planning press launches for new motorcycles and cars.

Lyndsey finished school, she got a BA in communications from BYU. Her husband however is in school and is getting his MBA at BYU.

Some interesting facts about Lyndsey...she got engaged at the top of the Empire State Building and has been married for a little over three years. She hates the snow and cold. And she has really bad road rage :)

Sister Spotlight: Janice Vick

Janice was born in Los Angeles, California and grew up in Burbank, California. Janice raised my own family in California and moved to Utah in 1987.

Janice has 5 children in her birth family--2 brothers and 2 sisters (she's the oldest). She has 4 children--3 girls, 1 boy, all living far away from her; 17 grands; 7 great grands; 1 grandson is at BYU who comes over regularly to do laundry. She has lots of nieces and nephews, some at school/work here. Also, her dad is 96 and lives nearby, forgetful, but fun to visit.

Here are some of Janice's favorites:
Books: the Dorothy Gillman books about Mrs. Pollifax and her adventures.
Vacation: Going to Turkey and Thailand--it was exciting for her to see and learn about such different cultures.

Food: Strogonoff and her mom's shell macaroni casserole.

Janice has an English degree from BYU and went to nursing school in California. Janice doesn't work now but she used to be a nurse in her previous life.

Janice says she is not very interesting, but has been able to travel to some interesting places. She also says that feels she is not talented at anything but has gone through a quilt making and scrap booking faze, but not recently.

Her favorite scripture is all of 3 Nephi particularly chapter 17 verses 20-25.

Well there is Janice, she is also serving in our Ward as the 1st counselor in the Relief Society.

Here is some info for everyone to get to know Helen Dixon a little bit better...

Helen was born in Provo and has lived in Provo, Orem, Logan, Ogden, Los Alamos NM, San Diego, Germany, and Austria---and for 2 mos. in Laie, Hawaii.

Helen has 5 siblings---4 brothers and 1 sister---34 nieces and nephews, and 31 grand-nieces and -nephews. She lives with her dad, her mother passed away 2 1/2 years ago. Her father was a Physics professor at BYU.

Helen has MANY, MANY favorite books , but she has a particular fondness for Willa Cather's My Antonia.

She says that this week her favorite scripture is Proverbs 25:28, "He that hath no rule over his own spirit is like a city that is broken down, and without walls."

Helen's favorite vacation was one she took a number of years back. She went to Europe several times. She visited most of the countries of Europe---even some in Eastern Europe---and have also been to Israel. She loved every moment of my travels.

She says her most favorite food is anything Italian.

Helen plays the piano. She says she is not so great on the violin, but likes to try. She loves to read, and although she doesn't always love to write, she is told that it is one of her talents. Right now she is a taking a creative-writing class, which she adores. Helen likes to sew, and wishes she had more time and money to piece quilts (she's done a couple). Helen also likes to cook, but not do the dishes afterward (who does?). When the weather's nice, she likes to walk. Helen loves to learn new things, but is getting antsy to get out of school. Traveling is one of her passions, and she can't wait to get a job so that she'll have money to go to some new places---or back to Europe. Oh, and Helen likes teaching, learning foreign languages, and going to art museums, plays, and concerts.

Helen is attending UVU, where she is upgrading her English minor to a major so that she can either go back to being a school teacher (No Child Left Behind requires that you now have to have a major in a subject to be hired) or go back to being an editor. She has a bachelor's and master's degrees from BYU in Humanities, which is first love.

Helen also went on a mission to Germany and has taught English, German, Humanities, and history. She loves the gospel and the scriptures.

Sister Spotlight: Amy Jenni

Hello Everyone!!!! Here is the Spotlight for Amy Jenni......

Amy was born in Maryland and lived there until leaving for college. She even lived in the same house the whole time. Since leaving Maryland she has lived in Rexburg, Idaho; Santiago, Chile; Logan, Utah; and several places in Utah County.

Amy grew up in a family of 5 girls and they all went on to have boys so now Amy has 11 nephews and only 1 niece. Amy got married in April of 2008 to Christian Jenni and has 2 beautiful step-daughters. Shortly after Amy and Christian's 1st anniversary Christian left for Afghanistan, so Amy has been holding down the fort. Amy gets to see her daughters once a week while her husband is away and she loves spending time with them.

Amy says just picking one book as her favorite is a hard thing to do because it changes on a regular basis but "The Voyage of the Dawn Treader" in the Chronicles of Narnia series by C.S. Lewis is one of her favorites and "Inkheart" by Cornelia Funke is a close second.

Her favorite vacation was just this last spring break when we went with her husband and girls to Florida. It was there last trip before Christian's deployment so they splurged a little and went on a cruise to the Bahamas. She got to see a stingray in the ocean, which she says was pretty cool. They were also able to spend some time at Disney World, which was a lot of fun.

Amy says she LOVES vegetable.....peas, corn, potatoes, etc. She thinks they all are fabulous!!!

Amy works down in Springville at a Charter School as a reading and history teacher. She is also the after school drama teacher and just put on a production of "Annie".

Amy's most current favorite scripture is Moses 1:39...."For behold, this is my work and my glory-to bring to pass the immortality and eternal life of man."

Sister Spotlight: Season Giles

Everyone meet Season Giles. She was born in Nebraska, but her family moved to Las Vegas when she was five, which is where she grew up. Season is the youngest of five —she has two brothers and two sisters. She has bunches and bunches of nieces and nephews.

Season has a tons of favorite books which include To Kill a Mockingbird, The Great Gatsby, Anne of Green Gables, Walk Two Moons, Wuthering Heights, Pride and Prejudice, Screwtape Letters, and Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. Her favorite book that she has read this year is "The Book Thief" by Markus Zusak.

Her favorite vacation was Hawaii, where she and her husband went for their honeymoon, and she has wanted to go back ever since. Season has also always had a thing for Boston and finally got to visit there just a couple of weeks ago—which is where she is at in the picture above.

Season says she is pretty much just a fan of food in general. However, she does not like seafood. Season loves to read, write, and do graphic design. and she also wants to take up sewing.

Season went to BYU-Idaho and graduated in Communications and minored in English. Now she works for an online craft store called Oh My Crafts. She is in charge of their blog and does a lot of their photography and graphic designs.

Her favorite scripture is Jacob 6:12 "O be wise; what can I say more?"

What a wonderful Halloween Party we had. Thanks to all those who helped to put it on. The turn out was great, if you couldn't make it you sure did miss out!!!!

There was a Chili Cook-Off where Jim Garrison won with his White Chicken Chili. Owen Svendsen won the kids costume contest with his adorable Dumbo costume, and Brad Stoker won the adult costume contest with his skeleton costume. Danny Delange won the Pumpkin Carving contest with his pumpkin with the guts coming out.

Sister Spotlight: Janice Gardner

Janice Gardner is the lovely wife to our wonderful bishop. Janice was born in Blackfoot, Idaho and grew up in Idaho Falls, Idaho. Before settling here in Orem, where she has lived for the past 30 years, Janice lived in California, Arizona, and Texas. Janice and her husband, Robert have 5 children. They have 3 girls and 2 boys. Their 2 boys live here in Utah County; 1 has 4 children and the other has 1 child. Their oldest daughter lives in Orem and teaches at Lone Peak. Their second daughter is married and lives in Connecticut and has 1 child. And then their youngest daughter teaches kindergarten in Washington DC. So the current grandchild count is 2 girls and 4 boys. Besides being with their family Janice and Rob love to travel, go to plays, concerts, hikes, and bike...whenever they get a chance!!

Janice says that she works as the family landscaper, housekeeper, cook, financial assistant, and recreational deviser. Her favorite books are Count of Monte Cristo (for Drama), Emma (for Romance), and The Articles of Faith (for Religious). Janice's favorite foods are chocolate from Germany, Mexican tacos, South American breads, and Lasagna.

Janice has several vacations that she has enjoyed. For family outings she has enjoyed going to the Uintah mountains, Bryce, and Zions. For Church history vacation she likes going to Palmyra and Kirkland. For vacations out in the world she has enjoyed Asia, South America, Spain, and spending Christmas in Germany.

Janice's favorite scripture is Jeremiah 29:11-13. Janice also says the Life is Good--It's a journey of adventure and discovery: mainly over rocky roads, sometimes smooth sailing, and often through solitary by-ways. So her motto is ENJOY THE JOURNEY.

Sister Spotlight: Heather Buchanan

Meet Heather Buchanan. Heather and her husband Jared have been in the ward since it was created 3 years ago. Heather has 2 kids, Ian (4), and Maggie (2). Heather grew up in Southern California but has lived here in Utah for 13 years now. She has 2 brothers and 2 sisters.

Heather loves to craft. She likes to quilt, crochet, and do little craft projects. She usually ALWAYS has some sort of project she is working on. Her favorite books are the Twilight series and is re-reading once again. She loves to eat any form of Mexican food (especially chips and salsa) and could eat it everyday. Her favorite vacation was one she just went on this past Spring, which was an Eastern Caribbean Cruise with her husband. They enjoyed a wonderful 7 day (KIDLESS) cruise to Belize, Cozumel, Honduras, and the Great Stirrup Cay. She got to do things there that she has never done before like Snuba diving (a form of scuba diving), repelling in the jungle, rafting through caves, and getting stung by a jelly fish. She also can't pass up the opportunity to go to Disneyland. She has been going there since she was a little girl and LOVES it. Now that her kids are old enough to enjoy it she loves taking them to see there excitement as they spend the day at "The Happiest Place on Earth".

Heather is a stay at home mom and loves it. However she does work part time at Great Clips in Provo doing hair. She has been working there on and off for the past 12 years. She usually doesn't let people know that she does hair but I guess the cat is out of the bag now. She really enjoys cutting hair and loves the few hours a week she gets to go and work but loves being a mom even more.

Her favorite scripture is D&C Section 4. She says this is her favorite because a religion professor at Ricks College made her memorize it to the tune of "Called to Serve".

Sister Spotlight: Jessica Tyler

This is Jessica Tyler (& her husband Jonathan). Jessica and Jonathan have been married for 2 years and have been in the ward for 1 year. She serves in our Ward as the Young Women's President. Jessica was born in Colorado Springs, CO and lived there until she was 5 then moved to Boise, Idaho. Jessica is the oldest of 5 kids. She has a brother (20) serving a mission in the West Indies, another brother (17) who is a Senior in High School, another brother (15) who is a sophomore in High School, and a sister (12) who is a 7th grader. Jessica's wonderful parents and siblings still live in Boise. Jessica also has fantastic in-laws and brother and sister in-laws, as well as 2 nephews and 5 nieces.

Jessica's favorite book is "The Little Prince". Her favorite vacation was studying abroad in Paris (she says it was more like a vacation than school). Her favorite foods are Couscous, Ratatouille, Chocolate Chip Cookies, Quiche, and Salmon. She says her favorite scripture changes all the itme but right now it is D&C 88:118.

Jessica got her undergraduate degree from BYU in French with an Art Minor. She just started her first year of Law School at BYU. Her husband Jonathan will finish his undergraduate degree in Business Entrepreneurship at UVU in April. They love to travel and hope to go on some big adventures when they are both done with school.

Sister Spotlight: Emi Parkes

Here is some info about Emi Parkes: She was born here in Orem and has lived here and Machida, Japan. She has one brilliant husband, Michael (who is the Elder's Quorum President); and two fabulous boys - Johnny (age 6) and Damien (age 4). Emi loves soccer, reading, ice fishing, playing the piano, BYU football, scrap booking, and playing games with family and friends. Her new favorite book is "Atlas Shrugged" by Ayn Rand. She also loves the book "The Great Divorce" by CS Lewis and stuff from the Calvin and Hobbes collection. Her favorite thing to eat is spaghetti with french bread. Emi says that as far as having a vacation spot, well.....she has never been disappointed in the beaches in California. She doesn't work right now but is going back to school to finish her degree in Math Education.

Emi's favorite scriptures are Proverbs 31:29, St. John 14:27, and though it may seem odd - Acts 5:41.

Sister Spotlight: Megan Parkinson

Meet Megan Parkinson. Megan and her husband Cliff just got married (August 15) and moved into the ward. Megan was born in Salt Lake but grew up in Heber. Megan has 2 loving parents and is the second of seven children. Her oldest brother is here at BYU and just starting the MBA program this fall. Megan loves living close to him so she can see and babysit his two children, her niece and nephew. Her brother just younger than her is also attending BYU this year. He and his wife are expecting a little girl this November and Megan is TERRIBLY excited. Child #4 is Megan's sister Whitney who just married this summer as well. Child #5 is a senior in High School this year. Then there was a 10 year gap in the family and 2 more little girls joined the family who are now 7 and 5 (they are pictured with Megan and Cliff above). We might even get a chance to meet them because they love to come and have sleepovers. Oh and for those who knew Megan Blodgett who recently moved from our ward, Megan and Megan are cousins!!!

Megan says she can't pick a favorite book. It changes depending on her mood and what book she just finished. She loves to read and would LOVE any suggestions for good books to read. Her favorite vacation would have to be her recent honeymoon to Santa Barbara with her new husband. Other than that she loves Disneyland and Disney world...she says she still has the princess complex. Luckily her husband doesn't mind and promises to take her to the new Princess and the Frog movie opening night!!!

Megan loves all Italian food and anything her husband cooks. Luckily for her he thinks cooking is a "fun art form" so she never has to cook. She says the strangest food that she loved (and eat frequently) is tuna fish (mixed with mayo) on pancakes/french toast/waffles with maple syrup on top. I guess we are all gonna have to try that one!!!!

Megan and her husband are both attending BYU right now. They are both in their final year of J. Ruben Clark Law School (Year 3) and they are very excited to be done with their graduate degrees this April. They also both did their undergrads here at BYU. Megan got her degree in English Linguistics, which focuses on dialects, historical linguistics, psychological aspects of language, and editing (grammar/usage/writing). She says most people give her a confused look when she tells them what her major was because it is a new major that BYU started only in 2003. Her husband got his degree in Classics (Greek and Latin History). While going to school Megan is also working at a small law firm in Provo -- Robison, Seiler, & Anderson. She loves the firm and the work. Working there renews her faith in attorneys; they are some of the nicest people she has ever met.

Megan says her favorite scripture is 2 Nephi 22:2,6 "Behold, Gos is my salvation; I will trust, and not be afraid; for the Lord Jehovah is my strength and my song; he also has become my salvation...Cry out and shout, thou inhabitant of Zion; for great is the Holy One of Israel in the midst of thee."

Megan also says that she never knew being married could be SO fun!!!! Welcome to ward and we are excited to get to know you better!!!

Enrichment: The Parable of the Piggies

Bonnie Parks presented to us ways to save money on our groceries by coupon clipping. There is a great website out there call Grocery Smarts that it a great help to the couponing world. The password to get on is g84cml. This great website gives you what is on sell at the grocery stores around and how to save even more more money by telling you where there are additional coupons. You should check it out and if you have any questions I am sure Bonnie would love to answer them.

This little piggy stayed home

Amy Jenni talked briefly about ways we simplify our lives with de-cluttering our homes. She suggests to START SMALL - focus on a goal that you can conquer in one afternoon. If you know that organizing your kitchen will be too much all at one time just focus on one drawer or one cupboard for that say.
START WITH A CLEAN SLATE - Empty out or clear out whatever it is that you are organizing.
CATEGORIZE
DE-JUNK - IF you haven't used something in the last 6 months chances are you won't miss it if it is gone.
CREATE A HOME - Clutter accumulates when you get new things and don't have a place for them do find a home for your things.

Wendy shared ideas about food storage. Having a 3 month supply is a great way to start. Build a small supply of food that is part of your normal, daily diet. One way to do this is to purchase a few extra items each week to build a one-week supply of food. Then you can gradually increase your supply until it is sufficient for three months. These items should be rotated regularly to avoid spoilage. Wendy also gave a great idea about having meals in a bag. Get everything you need for a meal and put into a bag. This way you have everything for your meals all together and ready to go.

Deanna Rowen shared with us on how to build our financial houses. You are the master; money is the servant.
1. Pay an honest tithing, generous fast offering
2. Work with a partner and seek the Lord's help
a. Write down your desires
b. Plead with the Lord for his help
c. Make realistic goals and commit to live worthily - spending plan, return, and report. Goals must be positive ("I will...." rather than "I won't")
d. Work as though all depends on you -- Focus with Faith on what you can do.
3. Debt is the ENEMY. Live on less than you earn; save some.
4. Teach your children.

The ever so lovely Barbra Wardle gave us ways to endure to the end and find the joy along the way.
1. Don't sweat the small stuff!! Most of the things that upset us day to day won't matter unless we let them.
2. Nearly everything is small stuff!! Unless it hurts someone else, makes someone be disappointed in you or in their world, it won't matter tomorrow.
3. The easiest way to find joy is to give it to another. So, do all you can, for everyone you can, in every way that you can, to make their lives better.
4. Be good to yourself!! Eat healthy, exercise, think good thoughts.
5. Exercise your mind every day/ Be open to learning something new everyday.
6. Don't be afraid to stop and smell the roses, or watch a child at play, or spend time saying thanks for all you know, for all those who love you and for those you love.

Sister Spotlight: Julia Schaefermeyer

Julia Schaefermeyer has been in the ward for about 3 years. She was born in La Paz, Bolivia and lived there until moving here to Utah bout 10 years ago. Julia and her husband James have 3 kids, 2 girls and 1 new sweet little baby boy.

Julia likes to scrapbook and cross stitch when she can find the time to do so. She likes to go for walks and to go camping. She also enjoys singing, dancing, and reading a good book. Her favorite books are the Twilight Series. She says her favorite meal is a good steak, mashed potatoes, a green salad and apple pie for dessert. Her favorite vacation is when she got to go to Seward Alaska in 2003.

Her favorite scriptures are 1 Corinthians Chapter 13, the whole Chapter is about Charity.

Just wanted to let those who were not able to attend church today to keep the Solano and Lundquist families in their prayers. The Solano family lost their son Cody this past week. This is the family that lives in our ward boundaries that's son was up at Primary Children's Hospital. The Lundquist's grandson past away recently in a tragic car accident. Their grand-daughter in law is injured but their 3 month old baby is doing just great.

Pleas just remember these dear families in your prayers.

Sister Spotlight: Bonnie Parks

Here is Bonnie Parks. Bonnie and her husband Matt, who is serving a counselor in the Bishopric, have lived in the ward for 3 years. Bonnie has lived in Singapore (this is where she was born); Houston, Texas; and Manti, Utah. Bonnie is a mother to 2 very cute little girls, Amy (who is 2) and Noel (who is 2 months). Bonnie loves music, reading and playing with her girls. Bonnie reads a lot and has too many favorite books to just pick one. Bonnie enjoys eating Mexican food, especially enchiladas. Her favorite scripture is John 6:67-69. Oh and Bonnie didn't tell me this but I do know that she loves ducks and her favorite color is yellow.

Sister Spotlight: Whitney Whitehead

This is Whitney Whitehead. If you don't recognize her it probably is because she serves in the Primary Presidency. Whitney and her husband Cal have been the ward for about 3 years. They have an English Bulldog named Phil. Whitney was born in Provo and has lived her whole life here in Orem, and LOVES it!!!! She likes to go anywhere with Cal. They don't travel far but love to get aways for little weekend trips. She does love going to Yellowstone.

Whitney graduated from UVU with a degree in Psychology and now works as a collection agent, which she says is great FUN!!!! LOL!!! She says her hobbies are her husband Cal, cooking and finding new recipes. She likes to eat any kind of salad, veggie fajitas, and lentil tacos. Without choosing a church book her 2 favorite books right now are "The Complete Idiots Guide to Being a Vegetarian" and "The Secret Life of Bees". Her favorite scripture is Proverbs 3:5-6 "Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not unto your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him and He will direct your path."

Whitney and her husband Cal are hoping to adopt a child. They are working with LDS Family Services and are approved. They are just in the "WAITING " process right now. They love to let people know that they want to adopt so the word could spread like a wild fire. The both have strong testimonies of adoption and really love that they get this opportunity. Sister Spotlight: Eva Jean Call

Eva Jean Call was born in Rigby, Idaho and lived in California (Bay Area) for 30 years; mostly in Danville, Walnut Creek, and Concord before moving to Meridian, Idaho for 2 years, then in Tualatin, Oregon for 10 years. Eva Jean then went on 2 missions, the first was to Seoul, West Korea and the second was to Nashville, Tennessee. After her 2 missions she finally settled here in Orem.

Eva Jean and her husband have 6 children, their spouses, 16 grandchildren, and 3 great-grandchildren. She teaches piano 3 days a week in Alpine and Grandview. She says that she is on a Seafood diet....she sees food and eats it. She likes most foods except some kinds of fish. Her favorite vacations have been going to the Holy Land (twice), Europe, Mexico, and Canada and she says that US is still the best. Eva Jean enjoys reading and has too many favorite books to chose from and is currently reading Gerald Lund's new book "The Undaunted" (for the RS Book Club which she does a fabulous job of putting together each month). She also enjoys playing the piano and organ, cooking (collecting recipes), and her grandchildren.

Her favorite scripture is Alma 7:23-24...."And now I would that ye should be humble, and be submissive and gentle; easy to be entreated; full of patience and long-suffering; being temperate in all things; being diligent in keeping the commandments of God at all times; asking for whatsoever things ye stand in need, both spiritual and temporal; always returning thanks unto God for whatsoever things ye do receive. And see that ye have faith, hope, and charity, and then ye will always abound in good works. Eva Jean is a people person and enjoys visiting with people of all ages so if you get a chance go talk with her.

Meet Summer King. Summer and her husband Spencer have been in the ward for 3 years and have a cat named Milo. Summer is the oldest fo 3 kids. She has one brother and one sister. Summer was born in Tampa Florida and lived there until she was 7, then her family moved to Parkersburg, West Virginia. She lived in West Virginia until she moved here to go to BYU. Summer has a Master's Degree in Physiology and now works for Nature's Sunshine in Spanish Fork as a Quality Scientist. She tests their herbal products for identity, active ingredients, safety, etc. Summer has recently acquired a new hobby of learning how to save money on her groceries and using coupons to build up her food storage.

Summer says that her favorite vacation was a recent trip she took with her husband to Florida to visit with her mom's family. They drove all over the state--Miami, the Everglades, Tampa, Orlando, and Gainesville. She also really like any warm place with a beach. One of Summer's favorite books is Matilda by Roald Dahl. She also LOVES books by Joshilyn Jackson. She loves reading stories about women, like Oprah's book club books. Her favorite scripture is Moses 6:63..."And behold, all things have their likeness, and all things are created made to bear record of me, both things which are temporal, and things which are spiritual; things which are in the heavens above, and things which are on the earth, and things which are in the earth, and things which are under the earth, both above and beneath; all things bear record of me."

This is Amanda Moline Hutchings. She has been in the ward since March 2008. Before settling her ein Orem she has lived in Little Rock, Arkansas; Sherwood, Arkansas; Stow, Ohio; Cumming, Georgia. Rexburg, Idaho; Sacramento, California; and Roseville, Californis. Amanda is the youngest of 5 children(3 brothers and 1 sister) and is a mother to 3 beautiful girls: Abbey 5, Mariah 3, and Cali 4 months. Amanda currently is unemployed outside the home, but works OVERTIME at home. She is also a volunteer for Meals on Wheels. Amanda is not going to school but whould like to go back and finish. When she was in school she studied Sports Medicine. Amanda enjoys playing the piano solely for her own pleasure.

She says that she is not the craftiest person but does enjoy scrap booking, sewing, floral arrangements, etc. She especiall LOVES organizing and doing home improvents such as painting, staging homes and de-cluttering. Amanda is really into excerise, but LOVES her food and LOVES to cook and create her own recipes. She LOVES Italian and Mexican foods along with home -cooked salmon & steak. She also LOVES sweets and makes them often,pprobably too often. She also loves the combination of chocolate with peanut butter.

Amanda says she doesn’t have a favorite book because she doesn’t have a ton of time to read, but during her last pregnancy when she was horribly sick and was really good friends with the couch, and her mother-in-law bought her the twilight series and read them all in 5-weeks and really enjoyed them.

Amanda also says she honestly can't pick a favorite scripture. As a gospel doctrine teacher right now each time she teaches she finds, or is reminded of great scripture passages, and they temporarily become her favorite until she finds another one she loves. Her favorite vacation she went on was a trip she got to take with her husband to take all by their selves when Abbey was 1. They went to Florida and Amanda got to go to Disney World for the 1st time in her life. They were also able to going swimming with manatee's and go to Fort Lauderdale and enjoy some time at the beach. She says it was so fun to have 1 on 1 time with her husband and get to be spontaneous again!

Here is an interesting fact about Amanda: She says that one day she would love to move down to the South and buy a big beautiful southern mansion and turn it into a bed and breakfast and have her own bakery!

Here is a recipe Amanda wanted to share for an Oatmeal Cake that she made for the August Lunch Bunch

Oatmeal Cake
Cake:
1 1/2 c boiling water
1 c quick oatmeal
1/2 c margarine

Bring water to a boil in a 4 cup glass measuring cup, glass bowl, or pan. Add oatmeal and margarine. Stir. Cover. Let stand for 20 minutes.

While oatmeal is standing, grease and flour a 9x13 pan.

Mix together in a large bowl:
1 c white sugar
1 c brown sugar
1 1/3 c flour
1 tsp. soda
1/2 tsp cinnamon
1/2 tsp salt

Stir 2 eggs into oatmeal mixture (after the 20 min. standing time)

Combine oatmeal mixture and dry ingredients and pour into the pan.
Bake at 350 degrees for 35-40 minutes
(While cake is baking, make topping)
When cake is done, remove from oven and turn oven temp to broil.

Topping:
6Tbsp. Margarine or butter
1/2 c brown sugar
1/2 tsp vanilla
1/4 c milk
1 c coconut flakes
1 c chopped pecans
While cake is baking, mix topping ingredients together in pan and bring to a boil. When cake is done baking (and while waiting for oven to reach broil temperature) spread topping on the cake. Broil in oven until golden brown (approximately 2 minutes) watch carefully because all of a sudden it's golden brown.

Sister Spotlight: Gaye Merrill

Gaye Merrill has been in our ward since it was formed (about 3 years now) and has lived over on Hanover since 1989. She was born and raised in Blackfoot, Idaho. She has also lived in Provo, Bloomington Indiana, Pittsburg, & Kansas before settling here in Orem. Gaye has 4 brothers and 2 sisters. Gaye enjoys reading and her favorite book is "The Five People You Meet In Heaven" by Mitch Albohm. She also enjoys jogging, horseback riding, and watching lots of sporting events. She works at BYU in the Sports Medicine Department. She gets to travel with the sports teams and her favorite trip was going to Australia and New Zealand with the BYU Men's Volleyball Team. Gaye enjoys eating Italian food especially authenitc Italian food. She says her favorite scripture is Mark 9:23-24 and the entire account of Christ's visit to the Americas in 3rd Nephi. To get to know Gaye a little better you will have to come and listen to one of her FABULOUS lessons she teaches in Relief Society.

Sister Spotlight: Carrie Joslin

This is Carrie Joslin. She and her husband have been in the ward for about a year but are moving at the end of the month (that's why she gets to be first so we can quickly get to know her before she moves). Some of you may say "I've never seen her before"...that's because she works in the Primary as the chorister. I have seen her at work and she does a wonderful job. Well now onto to a little more about Carrie, she grew up in Tennessee and is the youngest of 6 kids. She has LOTS of nieces and nephews and loves to spend time with them. Carrie loves going back home to Tennessee but someday she really wants to go to Italy. Carrie loves the performing arts. She is actually a Senior at UVU studying Theater and will graduate in the Spring of 2010. Carrie will be working at the Theatre Box Office at UVU this fall (sounds right up her alley). Carrie's favorite books are The Great and Terrible Series. She doesn't have just one favorite scripture, she has lots of favorite scriptures. Carrie says that she will miss this ward very....we will miss you too!!!!

We want to welcome Ashlee Villordo and Megan Parkinson to our Ward.

Ashlee lives on Hanover in the Rebaza's basement and Megan lives in Orchard Creek. Megan is the cousin of Megan Blodgett who just recently moved from our ward.

We are so glad to have you with us!!!

Lesson 36: Receiving Ordinances an Blessing of the Temple

The temple is a place where God can "reveal unto His people the ordinances of His house and the glories of His kingdom, and teach the people the way of salvation."

Ethel Hansen presented a wonderful lesson to us
today on Temples.

We briefly discussed why we have temples and
why we need temples.

Ethel shared with 2 great stories, one about the first time she went to the temple and the other was about her sister and making cloths for the Oquirrh Mountain Temple. If you want to hear these stories you will have to ask her.

Ethel ended with telling us...."if you are struggling with the the temple concept just put your hand on the iron rod and the Lord will help you....the temple is the way."

This lesson was great reminder to me about how wonderful and special temples are.
